Ken Bishop: Visit the Moose Lodge in
Redding just about any Monday night and you'll hear a man's chanting voice
over blaring music played before a room of square dancers. Bishop sounds
like a cross between an auctioneer with an incredible sense of timing and a
kindly drill sergeant. But he's not just any caller, Ken Bishop founded the
Shasta Dam Dandies in 1957 and called for the group for 41 years, something
that earned him recognition via an official proclamation and plaque by Sen.
Maurice Johannessen, R-Redding. Born in Springfield, Mo., Bishop spent his
childhood summers in the Ozarks visiting relatives. He recalls countless
summer evenings when the adults would clear furniture from the dining room
and make way for a live band and a host of square-dancing neighbors. Those
festive memories remained dormant until years later when he and his wife
began taking square-dance classes in Southern California. His wife joked,
she could do better than the caller, and to prove it, bought records to
practice. Seemingly by osmosis, Bishop picked it up and was hooked. He's
been a square-dance caller ever since. At 84 this retired engineer for
Gerlinger Steel of Redding, Ca and his wife Marilyn can be found every
Monday at the Moose Lodge in Redding, Ken will be the one behind the
microphone. |
